A slew of new all-electric BMWs is on its way, starting with a four-door sedan concept set to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.
Although the new sedan is still shrouded in mystery, Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management, said that it slots in between the i3 and i8.
The sedan will be one of 12 fully electric cars BMW anticipates producing by 2025, and one of 25 electrified vehicles it expects to produce by that year.
“Let me make one thing very clear: In e-mobility, the BMW Group will also be the leading provider in the premium segment,” said Krüger. The electric sedan “is a vision we want to realize in the foreseeable future. And a further step in our commitment to sustainable mobility.”
Although Kruger did not mention the concept’s name, he did reveal that all future fully electric BMWs will belong to the “i” brand. That includes the forthcoming all electric X3 the brand plans to introduce in 2020.

The electric X3 will be the first core BMW model to go fully electric, but many more will follow. The automaker is investing millions in its factories to allow them to offer electric drivetrains in all classes of vehicle.
“From 2020 onwards, we will meet [customer] needs by offering all types of drive trains in all vehicle classes,” said Klaus Fröhlich, head of development, at the same press conference. “Our customers will be able to choose between super-efficient, super-clean combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric battery-powered vehicles.”
BMW is confident that customer demand will require it to offer electric vehicles thanks to new battery technology it says will allow its cars to travel up to 700 km (435 miles) on a single charge.
The electric revolution expands beyond just BMW, too. All brands will feature electrified models. That includes not just MINI, but Rolls-Royce and BMW M vehicles, too.
“We take our responsibility to society, our customers, our employees, and the environment seriously,” said Krüger. “That is why we are working hard and fast on the shift towards sustainable mobility.”
